BBC Sound of 2011: James Blake

Over the break I had dinner and drinks with a group of old friends. We discussed our year, our Christmases, our future plans. I asked what music everyone was looking forward to. It proved to be a bit of a conversation stopper, mainly because none of use had really thought about it. Does that mean new musicians? Does it mean new albums from old favorites? If I had my druthers, The Weakerthans and Beirut would be putting out new albums this year, creating a indie rock trifecta of sonic goodness since The Decemeberists are already releasing a new album. But that’s all speculation. For new music, I typically turn to the BBC’s Sound of the Year list. They feature new and up coming artists who they think will make it big in the coming year. I discovered Ellie Goulding and Florence and the Machine through this list. I think I’m going to be listening to a lot more of James Blake in the next few months.
