Song of the Day: The Cambridge Singers/John Rutter direction, “What is this Lovely Fragrance?”

“What is this Lovely Fragrance?” is one of my favorite Christmas carols. Of course, it’s a John Rutter arrangement. I think we worked through the whole Rutter catalog in church choir. Despite Rutter’s hatred of altos (I only slightly joke here), his music is hauntingly beautiful. My dad, who was a glorious tenor, liked this song too. I can half hear his voice singing it. I think my favorite verse is the first one: “What is this lovely fragrance wafting/Like to the scents of flowers in Spring?” It’s the word “wafting” I think. Such an evocative word.
