Upfront week–the week the broadcast networks reveal their slate of new shows for the fall–coincides with the end of the semester, although there’s usually a week in between. Lots of interesting stuff, uhm, mostly not on NBC, who is having programming issues but had the good sense to renew Community. If only ABC had done so for Happy Endings. (Come on USA pickup!) Here’s a few shows that looking promising:
Sleepyhollow (FOX): premise, Ichabod Crane pulls a Rip Van Winkle, goes to sleep during the American Revolution and wakes up in the here and now. Naturally, so does the headless horseman. Literary references, check. Small town cops out of their league, check. Picturesque New England village, check. Time travel and the founding fathers, check. J.J. Abrams, conspiracy guru, check. Orlando Jones on my TV every week, double check.
Us & Them (FOX): yes it’s a remake of Gavin and Stacey, but I adore both Josh Ritter and Alexis Bledel.
Dracula (NBC): I said mostly not on NBC. And yes, while this could flop badly, I’m digging Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Dracula and the fact that it airs concurrently with me teaching Dracula in Brit lit in the Fall. Total coincidence, but I’m going to take full advantage of it.
I’ll add more as the week and more shows are announced. Now USA, please do me a favor and resurrect Happy Endings.
