Fall 2015 Historic Films about Women

So two very different films about women’s journeys. Brooklyn decidedly in the sweeping personal romantic drama category, but one that I’m hoping is more about personal journey given that it is written by Nick Hornby and I trust him to do more with female characters than mere caricature. Plus I don’t think Saoirse Ronan has to choose conventional roles. The other, Suffragette, is a fictionalized account of the militant phase of the suffrage movement in England. Again, I’m hoping the film, written by Abi Morgan, moves beyond caricature and perhaps gets at some of the complexities of the movement. I’m encouraged by the fact that there are working-class characters. I’m just hoping the tensions in the movement are explored more than just the militancy.
